Disney Branded TV has confirmed that an as-yet-untitled fifth installment of its popular fantasy musical franchise Descendants is in the works.
Descendants 5 will be released on Disney+ and Disney Channel, with production scheduled to begin soon under the watch of returning EPs Suzanne Todd (Alice in Wonderland) and Gary Marsh (Wizards Beyond Waverly Place).
Kimmy Gatewood (The Baby-sitter’s Club) is pulling double-duty as co-producer and director; Emilio Dosal (Wicked) is on board as choreographer; and EP Tamara Chestna (Sneakerella) is penning the script with Dan Frey and Ru Sommer, who both worked on the fourth film, Descendants: The Rise of Red (2024).
The saga’s latest story will explore the consequences faced by princess protagonists Red and Chloe—daughters of the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella—who experienced time travel hijinks in the fourth movie, thanks to a magic pocketwatch. Disney Branded TV has also teased the addition of new characters from Alice in Wonderland.
The Descendants movies all revolve around the teenage children of classic Disney villains, and they also include multiple music and dance sequences—a formula that has really worked for the studio from a viewership standpoint over the past decade.
Last year’s The Rise of Red amassed 33 million views in 12 weeks on Disney+, making it the streamer’s most-watched original live-action movie of 2024. And the first three Descendants films were also the most-watched cable movie among six to 11s and nine to 14s in their respective release years (2015, 2017 and 2019).
