Nickelodeon greenlights Avatar: Seven Havens

Original series co-creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are back with this new sequel project.
February 20, 2025

In a move to continue expanding the lucrative Avatar IP on screen, Nickelodeon has just commissioned a new series called Avatar: Seven Havens (26 x 30 minutes).

This 2D-animated toon is the latest installment in the Avatarverse—originating with Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005 to 2008) and later followed by a 2010 live-action film adaptation, a sequel toon called The Legend of Korra (2012 to 2014) and most recently, a live-action Netflix series that debuted last year. The franchise is set in a world where people can control one of four elements (water, earth, fire or air) while one individual, known as the Avatar, has mastery over all four elements.

This new commission doubles down on Nickelodeon’s efforts to invest in the Avatar franchise since it launched a dedicated Avatar Studios division in 2021. Currently in production, Seven Havens will be split up into two 13-episode sections called Book 1 and Book 2. Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko—who were behind Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra—are back as co-creators of this new series. The duo will executive produce alongside Ethan Spaulding (Son of Batman) while Sehaj Sethi (The Winchesters) serves as co-EP.

Seven Havens tells the story of a young Earthbender who discovers that she’s the new Avatar after Korra and her missions to find her long-lost twin, to discover information about their origins and to save their civilization from the brink of collapse

This division is also working on a previously announced animated Avatar film that’s slated for a theatrical release on January 30, 2026.

Nick’s strategy to invest further in Avatar makes sense, given that the IP has, by consistent metrics, built a long-running appeal with audiences over the last two decades. For instance, the Netflix live-actioner scored a double-season renewal last year on the back of strong watchtime figures that landed it in the streamer’s top-five series rankings for the first half of 2024, with 71 million views.

Nickelodeon is also prepping several consumer product and LBE touchpoints for the franchise to capitalize on its 20-year anniversary. Jazwares is set to roll out a new toy line later this year. On the publishing side, there will be middle-grade chapter books (Random House), YA series (Abrams) and a comic mini-series (Dark Horse), among others. And this year’s planned events include immersive fan experiences at San Diego Comic-Con, and an orchestral concert experience that will tour worldwide this summer.

New digital content—including 10 episodes of Avatar: Chibi Minis and seven episodes of a gameplay series based on the upcoming Avatar Legends: Battlegrounds Roblox game—will launch on the official YouTube channels Avatar Legends (three million subscribers) and Avatar: The Last Airbender (151,000 subscribers).
