Netflix resurrects Hasbro’s live-action D&D series

Following its cancellation at Paramount, Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms will now be directed by Stranger Things' Shawn Levy.

Hasbro Entertainment has forged a new deal with Netflix to develop a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series called The Forgotten Realms

The move comes in the wake of Hasbro’s previous co-production partner, Paramount+, deciding not to proceed with a live-action adaptation of the fantasy role-playing game franchise last May, amidst a company-wide restructuring and Hasbro’s sale of eOne to Lionsgate. Paramount had been developing an eight-episode series since January 2023, with Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice, Skyscraper) on board to direct.

Now resurrected under Netflix’s banner, Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms will span 20 episodes, and head of television Gabriel Marano is overseeing the project, as confirmed on LinkedIn yesterday by Hasbro Entertainment president Olivier Dumont. Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) will direct, working with showrunner and writer Drew Crevello (WeCrashed).

This announcement comes hot on the heels of last week’s news that Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment have partnered to develop a live-action cinematic universe for the toyco’s other tentpole fantasy franchise, Magic: The Gathering. And it’s also working on a G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover film, plus feature film adaptations of iconic board games Clue (Sony Pictures, TriStar Pictures) and Monopoly (Lionsgate).
