Rooster Teeth co-founder Burnie Burns has reacquired the shuttered animation studio’s brand and remaining assets from Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) for an undisclosed sum through his independent prodco, Box Canyon Productions.
WBD shut down Rooster Teeth last March, citing new challenges in the media marketplace, including monetization, advertising, and shifting consumer behavior on digital platforms.
In the short term, Burns’ plan is to revive the company and bring it “back to its roots” in CG animation, machinima (animation produced from using existing video games) and podcasts. Its initial projects will include renewing production on some of the prodco’s classic shows; developing a new audio adventure titled Again; and creating a reimagining of Burns’ 1997 live-action thriller The Schedule.
Among the assets Box Canyon Productions acquired in the new deal are Rooster Teeth’s iconic web series Red Vs. Blue (pictured), 2D-animated adventure series Camp Camp, the RT Podcast Network, its company website, and all of the former company’s YouTube and social channels. One IP that will not be making a comeback under a relaunched Rooster Teeth is its tentpole anime franchise RWBY, which WBD sold to VIZ Media seven months ago for an undisclosed amount following the initial closure.
