Spin Master is bringing the world of Bakugan to the big screen, announcing a live-action feature film with industry vet Brad Peyton set to direct, write and produce. The project represents a new milestone for the franchise, which has become a global phenomenon since it first launched in 2007, thanks to its innovative toy line, anime series and trading card game.
Peyton, best known for directing blockbusters like Rampage and San Andreas, will collaborate with screenwriter Lindsay Harbert and Spin Master Entertainment to develop the screenplay.
With nearly 300 episodes of the Bakugan anime in the can and more than US$1 billion in lifetime toy sales worldwide, the franchise has a dedicated multi-generational fanbase that will be eager to see its signature battles unfold in live action. However, the timing of the theatrical release was not available at press time.
For Peyton, this project is a chance to bring an iconic universe to life in a way that will captivate both long-time fans and newcomers. Among his credits, the filmmaker directed and produced Atlas for Netflix, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Simu Liu; as well as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson starrers Rampage and San Andreas, which collectively earned more than US$400 million at the box office. In television, Peyton co-created Daybreak and directed Frontier, starring Jason Momoa. And he’s the founder of ASAP Entertainment, the production studio behind several of these projects.
This Bakugan project joins Spin Master’s growing movie slate, which also includes a third PAW Patrol film that’s set for release in 2026. The first two movies combined have done more than US$345 million in ticket sales.
