With an eye on expanding its content output, San Francisco’s Rebel Girls has brought in an experienced brand leader to set up this part of its business.
Anjelika Temple (pictured), who has been advising the company as a consultant since August, will serve as Rebel Girls’ first-ever chief content officer going forward. Temple is best known as the co-founder of a women’s lifestyle brand and website called Brit + Co, where she ran content as CCO from 2011 to 2021. And she has also consulted for clients including Michelle Obama’s PLEZi Nutrition and The Ellen Show.
In her new role, Temple is tasked with overseeing the conceptualization and development of multi-platform content for the Rebel Girls brand; having an eye on design across all channels, including consumer products and publishing; and shaping a robust YouTube strategy for Rebel Girls, which has generated 42 million views to date on the platform. She will be playing a particularly important role in Rebel Girls’ recently established sports vertical, where she’s responsible for upcoming content under partnerships with pro women’s softball league AUSL and sports brand Nike.
This week, the sports vertical rolled out a weekly volleyball match recap for tweens under a partnership with pro women’s indoor volleyball league LOVB. Encouraged by data, Rebel Girls is looking to invest in sports content to reach more tweens—for example, sports-themed stories make up around 45% of the top 20 most-watched titles on its YouTube channel. “Through content that connects seamlessly across video, audio and publishing channels, we’ll continue to meet girls where they are with stories that inspire confidence,” Temple tells Kidscreen.
Rebel Girls also recruited Erika Harvey as head of revenue last fall, charging her with managing ad sales and partnerships, as well as identifying new growth opportunities for the company. Harvey previously executed brand partnerships for companies like toyco GoldieBlox (VP of branded entertainment/partnerships) and AwesomenessTV (head of branded entertainment).
