As firefighters continue to battle three active wildfires in LA, the animation industry is responding to help families that have been displaced by this natural disaster.
Disney has pledged a total of US$15 million to relief and rebuilding efforts, dividing the funds among organizations including the American Red Cross, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Paramount is also committing US$1 million to be shared by the California Fire Foundation, the American Red Cross, Direct Relief, World Central Kitchen and Best Friends Animal Society, as well as continuing to provide help and resources to its own employees.
Toycos that mobilized late last week to provide relief have now been joined by several more, including the Mattel Children’s Foundation, which is donating to campaigns led by The Salvation Army, Good+Foundation and Baby2Baby, as well as partnering with Gap stores in the community to provide new toys to kids. Moose Toys (California Community Foundation, The Toy Foundation), Jazwares (Baby2Baby, Good+Foundation, First Responders Children’s Foundation) and MGA Entertainment (American Red Cross, Baby2Baby, Its Bigger Than Us) are also supporting various nonprofits with toy care packages and donations.
Pennsylvania-based weather forecast firm AccuWeather estimates that the LA wildfires have caused more than US$250 billion in damages, making this the most economically devastating wildfire in US history. More than 180,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, and 24 have died in the ongoing tragedy.
