In an announcement made yesterday at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony has unveiled that it’s working on a feature film adaptation of the Horizon video game franchise.

Sony’s PlayStation Studios is set to co-produce this live-actioner with Columbia Pictures, and it will tell the story of Horizon hero Aloy, who goes on an epic quest to discover how to defeat the dangerous mechanical beasts that have overrun her post-apocalyptic world. PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash says the film is in early development, and its director and release date will be announced at a later date.

Columbia is no stranger to translating PlayStation games to the big screen, having recently co-produced Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023). The treasure-hunting adventure pic proved to be a stronger draw at the box office, grossing US$407.1 million worldwide compared to Gran Turismo‘s US$122 million.

Amsterdam’s Guerrilla Games kicked off the Horizon IP in 2017 with Horizon Zero Dawn for PlayStation 4, releasing a sequel title called Horizon Forbidden West five years later. To date, this primarily teen-skewing franchise has sold more than 32 million units worldwide, and it has also spawned a VR title (Horizon Call of the Mountain) and a LEGO-themed game for kids (LEGO Horizon Adventures).
