In its latest sports content bet, Disney Branded TV has acquired a CG-animated series blending football and sci-fi from Sony Music Vision and Sony Pictures Television – Kids.

Although the timing is still TBD, Messi and the Giants (pictured) will premiere on Disney Channel before it hits the net’s on-demand service and Disney+ worldwide. Its producers have 22-minute episodes in mind, and they’ll be available in multiple languages, including English and Spanish.

Guy Toubes (Odd Squad) is on board as an EP and will oversee scripts, and Atlantis Animation in the Canary Islands (Tara Duncan) will produce the animation. Toubes and director Dan Creteur developed this project for Sony Music Vision and SPT Kids, in partnership with legendary footballer Lionel Messi—who has been attached since it was first announced in 2023.

The show concept tells the story of a talented 12-year-old footballer who’s transported from his home in Argentina to a mysterious alternate universe. Leo soon finds himself leading a fight against a group of tyrannical giants who rule this strange world.

Disney has been investing in more sports content lately to attract young viewers and trigger more co-viewing. This includes producing alternate animated telecasts of sporting events—the latest being the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks Christmas Day game, whose kid-friendly treatment (featuring appearances by Mickey Mouse and pals) will air on ESPN2 and stream on ESPN+ and Disney+.
