Leaving no entertainment platform untapped, preschool juggernaut Bluey is gearing up for a feature film debut that was announced by Disney and BBC Studios this morning.
Disney will manage global theatrical distribution rights to this CG-animated film, which is due to premiere worldwide in 2027. Following this big-screen release, it will be available globally on Disney+, as well as on ABC Kids and ABC iView in Australia.
No plot details are available yet, but it’s confirmed that Bluey’s whole family will be featured. And creator Joe Brumm—who is on board as a writer, director and executive producer—noted that the film is a natural progression for him after working on “The Sign,” a longer-format episode in season three.
Brumm also published an online letter announcing that he has “decided to take a break from [his] involvement in the TV series” to focus on this feature. “In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, ‘The Sign’ will mark my TV finale for Bluey, and I wrote it as such,” he says.
Other key team members working on the film include producer Amber Naismith (The Lego Movie) and co-director Richard Jeffery (Bluey). This will be a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios, so Ludo co-founders Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson will have EP credits, as will Justine Flynn on behalf of BBC Studios. Overseeing the project for the Mouse House is David Greenbaum, president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios.
Bluey is this year’s most-watched series on Disney+ worldwide. In the US, Nielsen has it pegged as 2024’s most-streamed series so far, with 842 million hours of watch time accrued as of November.
BBC Studios is financing and licensing the Bluey movie for distribution, with Screen Australia contributing post-production funding through its producer offset, and Screen Queensland supporting through its post, digital and visual effects incentive.
