Popular sitcom Malcolm in the Middle is making a comeback, with Disney+ putting in a global order for a four-episode reboot that will be produced by 20th Television and New Regency.

The original live-action series (151 x 20 minutes) aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006. It was renowned for breaking the fourth wall with its narration style, and expertly juggling black comedy and family themes. The premise revolved around a boy genius (played by Frankie Muniz) navigating life in his chaotic and oddball family, as well as the challenges that come with being the smartest kid in the room.

Muniz will reprise his role in the reboot, as will his on-screen parents Jane Kaczmarek (Lois) and Bryan Cranston (Hal). It’s set during their 40th wedding anniversary party, which Malcolm attends with his daughter.

Creator Linwood Boomer is set to return as scriptwriter, and will share EP credits with Ken Kwapis, who’s directing all four episodes. Also executive producing are Cranston; KatCo’s Tracy Katsky and Gail Berman; New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann; Jimmy Simons; and Laura Delahaye.

Unlike most sitcoms of its time, Malcolm in the Middle did not use a laugh track or a live studio audience, and it’s considered to have pioneered a single-camera filming style that paved the way for shows like The Office and Everybody Hates Chris. During its run, the series racked up a Peabody Award and seven Emmys.
