One of Hollywood’s most long-standing cat-and-mouse games is getting ready to kick into high gear again, as Warner Bros Pictures Animation puts a new Tom and Jerry movie into development.
There’s no word yet on title, plot or even animation style, but the studio has tapped three multi-hyphenates to write the film’s script—actors Rashida Jones (Inside Out) and Will McCormack (A Wrinkle in Time), and filmmaker Michael Govier (Just Add Magic). Jones and McCormack both have story credits on Pixar’s Toy Story 4 (2019), though they exited the production before it wrapped.
Pandemic-era feature Tom & Jerry (2021, pictured), a live-action/CG-animated hybrid, grossed US$136 million (against a budget in the range of US$50 million to US$79 million) and was also streamed in 1.2 million US households during its opening weekend on HBO Max, as per Samba.
Over the years, WB has continually refreshed the Tom and Jerry brand with new iterations to strengthen its exceptional longevity and global appeal. Last year, for example, the studio rolled out a localized toon called Tom & Jerry Singapore in the Asia Pacific market.
Since William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created these characters in 1940 for a series of slapstick-driven short films, Tom and Jerry have starred in 100-plus shorts, more than 15 movies and multiple TV series and spinoffs.
