Japanese anime producer and game publisher Bandai Namco is working on the next saga in the Gundam franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

Bandai announced the new anime series—which will be co-produced by its Sunrise subsidiary (Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop) and Studio Khara (Rebuild of Evangelion trilogy)—at a Gundam Conference Winter 2024 virtual event that was livestreamed on YouTube yesterday. Contributing to the Gundam canon for the first time, Kazuya Tsurumaki (Gunbuster, FLCL) is taking a turn as director, with Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Yoji Enokido (Sailor Moon S) writing the episodic scripts.

GQuuuuuuX (pronounced as g-quax) is set in a floating space colony and follows the adventure of high-school student Amate Yuzuriha, who competes in clan-centric underground mech battles with her friends. She faces off against the best pilots in the colony until a mysterious boy named Shūji hits the scene in a new Gundam—with the military’s space force in hot pursuit.

Ahead of the show’s premiere on Nippon TV later next year, distributor TOHO will roll out Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX – Beginning in Japanese theaters on January 17. This teaser film is an edit of several initial episodes and will lay the groundwork for future story arcs.
