As layoffs abound in all corners of the kids media industry, Laughing Dragon Studios in Montreal is implementing a unique commitment.
The 22-year-old prodco—which conducted its largest-ever round of job cuts on August 30, letting go of 38 staffers—has now brought back nearly half of this laid-off team. Five employees are already back to work, and another 10 (eight animators and two compositors) will return to their posts on Monday.
Back in August, Laughing Dragon CEO Ryan Sohmer informed employees who were being laid off that he intended to bring them back “as soon as we are financially able to do so.”
The news of the recent callbacks was announced on the company’s LinkedIn page, and signed by Sohmer. “I write this post for one reason, to hold myself publicly accountable to my staff, both former and current,” stated Sohmer in a post yesterday. “15 out of 38 is a good start, but I will not rest until offers can go out to all [of] them.”
Laughing Dragon’s upcoming projects include Skatebirds (26 x 11 minutes, pictured) and animation service work on Build-A-Bear’s Kabu (10 x 11 minutes).
