Indian VFX studio 88 Pictures has planted a flag in the video game development market with the launch of its new division 88 Games.

Best known for its work in the animation industry, 88 Pictures has credits on Paramount kids shows such as Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, Gremlins: Secret of Mogwai, Transformers: EarthSpark and Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight (pictured)

The company’s new gaming outfit is headed up by founder and CEO Milind Shinde and game director Shiben Bhattacharjee, who will initially focus on building AAA-budget titles (a category that starts at US$60 million) inspired by India’s history and culture. The lead execs have also just embarked on a hiring push to recruit talented developers from game studios around the world.

88 Games will make its industry debut tomorrow at the India Game Developers Conference in Hyderabad, where it will announce the first of three new titles in development for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. But the new division has already teased two games on its homepage: a narrative-led mystery title with the working title Project Codename K, which will be developed using Unreal Engine 5; and a smaller Unity-built puzzle experience called Project Unsung
