Channel 5 commissions Treehouse for Milkshake!

Serious Kids is distributing this mixed-media series, for which producer RD Studios has a net-zero carbon emissions plan.

In a deal brokered by distributor Serious Kids, UK broadcaster Channel 5 has commissioned London-based RD Studios to produce a live-action/animated/puppet preschool show called Treehouse (30 x seven minutes) that will premiere in its Milkshake! preschool block sometime next year.

RD CEO Ryan Dean and writer/producer Lowri Williams co-created this non-dialogue series concept about a group of costumed animal characters living together in a magical treehouse, where they learn about everything from dancing ballet to celebrating Diwali. Milkshake! presenter Olivia Birchenough will serve as a narrator who verbally prompts the on-screen action and communicates each episode’s lesson.

Primarily shot in live action, Treehouse has a handful of partners attached to help pull off a very eclectic mixed-media style. Plunge Creations’ Tim Simpson, who makes the costumes for popular series The Masked Singer, created the animal cast’s colorful get-ups. And Beakus (Big Lizard) is contributing some animation and special effects.

RD has also adopted a net-zero carbon emissions production standard for Treehouse and is achieving this goal in several ways, including powering its studio with solar panels and building the show’s sets from recyclable cardboard that can later be pulped and repurposed instead of stored.

In the UK, all major broadcasters require studios looking for commissions to report on their carbon footprint, develop a plan to reduce emissions, and provide evidence of actions taken.

Treehouse‘s focus on sustainability attracted Louise Bucknole, GM of kids and family at Paramount UK & Ireland, who adds that it also stands out with its character design and the way it blends storytelling, music and movement.
