Emily the Strange is gearing up to hit the big screen, with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Bad Robot developing an animated feature film based on the oddball character that has developed a large fanbase since originating as a skateboard graphic in 1991. Cynical, antisocial and witty, Emily is defined by her black-white-and-red color palette, her punk ethos and, of course, her four black cat besties.

Previous attempts by Universal and 20th Century Fox to get an Emily movie off the ground fell apart, but this one seems to be well down the pipeline. Original creator Rob Reger will executive produce with Trevor Duke-Moretz, and Pamela Ribon (Moana) is writing the screenplay. Rather than targeting a specific age group, the film will lead into edginess to broaden its appeal—similar to Netflix hits Wednesday and Stranger Things.

Since the early ’90s, Emily has developed into a sprawling franchise encompassing publishing, games and a wide array of other merchandise. Chronicle Books published four graphic novellas from 2001 to 2006, and the brand also extended into comic books (Dark Horse Comics) and YA novels (HarperCollins). These Emily titles have collectively sold more than half a million copies, according to the brand’s official website.
