Comcast generated US$32 billion in revenue this quarter, representing a 6.5% increase over the same period last year.
In its latest financial report, posted earlier this morning, net income at the conglomerate slipped by 10% to US$3.63 billion, compared to US$4.05 billion in Q3 2023.
Revenue contributed by the studios segment was up by 12.3% to roughly US$2.8 billion, primarily fueled by the box-office performance of Universal Pictures/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 (pictured). Since premiering in July, this tentpole pic has racked up US$965 million in ticket sales worldwide and is currently the third highest-grossing film of the year (only behind Disney’s billion-dollar hits Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine).
Kids & family features have been solid performers for the company, which is on a strong run with DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot. Released at the tail end of Q3, this dark-horse pic has already grossed US$234 million worldwide. The company is also gearing up for an enthusiastic response to Wicked, which is expected to have a robust opening next month, according to forecasts.
Comcast is also basking in the glow of this summer’s Olympic Games—which drove an 82% year-over-year revenue increase for Peacock (US$1.5 billion). The streamer picked up three million new subscribers in Q3 to reach 36 million, a 29% uptick from the previous year.
Theme parks were a weaker point, down by 5.3% to US$2.29 billion in revenue—with lower guest attendance at domestic theme parks cited as a contributing factor. But the Q3 report made sure to highlight the upcoming Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, a highly anticipated attraction that’s scheduled to open on May 22 next year.
