Toronto-based toyco Spin Master is teaming up with The Tetris Company to develop a new range of interactive toys that will ring in the 40th anniversary of the gaming sector’s all-time most iconic puzzle title next fall.

Several multiplayer board games, puzzles and cards are in the works, and Spin will leverage its experience with Rubik’s Cube and licensed board games to translate Tetris‘s block-stacking gameplay into new physical play patterns, says VP of marketing and global business team lead Adam Hyman.

Since hitting the market in 1985 as the launch title of Nintendo’s Game Boy handheld console, Tetris and its 220 re-releases and sequels have rolled out on more than 65 gaming platforms. It’s reportedly the best-selling game of all time, with more than 520 million units sold to date, according to The Tetris Company. This trumps Minecraft (300 million), Grand Theft Auto V (200 million) and Nintendo’s Wii Sports (83 million).

The Tetris brand is also no stranger to the consumer products market, and global licensing agent IMG is behind many of its most recent deals, including a partnership with Pop Mart on a Tetris x Mega Space Molly figure, new lines of branded footwear from Fila and Puma, and a bento box QSR initiative with European seafood chain The Sushi Shop.
