Sonic takes flight with AirAsia, while book-based series Azuro and Sam and Julia rack up more global sales.

  • Germany’s ZDF Studios has sold Sam and Julia to Czech TV (Czechia), RTV (Slovenia and Slovakia) and AMC and MTVA (Hungary). Based on books penned by Dutch author Karina Schaapman, this 78 x seven-minute series (pictured) is a co-pro from Cielo Films, Superswiss Red, ZDF/ZDF Studios, France Télévisions, Caribara and M.A.R.K.13. It launched this year in France (France Télévisions/Okoo) and the Netherlands (AVROTROS/Zappelin), and is slated to debut in Germany (ZDF/KIKA) early next year.

  • Malaysian airline AirAsia has teamed up with SEGA to roll out branding and in-flight experiences based on Sonic the Hedgehog. AirAsia X’s Airbus A330 aircraft will feature designs of the iconic vidgame character and his friends, while Sonic-themed catering (golden ring cakes) and merchandise (stickers) will be available on all AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia X flights starting in early 2025.

  • Hasbro is making a new line of crossover action figures that blend the Transformers and Naruto Shippuden. The anime franchise’s Kurama and Gamakichi characters will take on the form of Transformers robots in this mash-up pack that’s slated to hit retail in spring 2025. Along with accessories, the Kurama figure converts into a nine-tailed fox mode in 14 steps, while the Gamakichi figure becomes a toadbot in 12.

  • Chinese streamer Mango TV has picked up 2D-animated series Azuro & the Dragon Squad (52 x 11 minutes) from French studio La Chouette Compagnie. This book-based fantasy toon about a dragon and his rescue team premiered on France’s TF1 this year. La Chouette manages sales in China and Canada, while Paris-based Newen Connect distributes the show in all other global markets.
