Nintendo is planting its flag in a brand-new market with Alarmo, a motion-controlled alarm clock that leverages its gaming IPs to make going to bed and waking up more fun for kids.
The iconic Japanese gameco launched Alarmo yesterday on its e-commerce site for Nintendo Switch Online members, and will follow up with a global retail rollout next year. Nintendo’s latest gadget features motion-sensing technology that responds to users’ gestures, tracks sleep patterns and detects when they’ve gotten out of bed.
Before it’s time to wake up, Alarmo will launch one of 35 scenes inspired by Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4 and Ring Fit Adventure. Characters from these Nintendo classics will appear on the clock’s LCD screen and play music from the game they belong to. The intensity of the tunes will gradually increase the longer kids stay in bed, until villains Bowser and Ganondorf finally appear to issue a warning to rouse any persistent sleepyheads.
Nintendo plans to update Alarmo with additional game content post-launch, and free scenes inspired by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are expected to hit the device later this year.
No stranger to making weird hardware and toys to excite its fanbase, the company has previously released Nintendo Labo cardboard robot kits, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit RC cars and add-on Game Boy accessories such as e-readers and printers.
