Sony Pictures Networks India is partnering with Japanese broadcaster TV Asahi to co-produce a sequel to the comedy-driven 1989 anime series Obocchama-kun, based on Yoshinori Kobayashi’s same-name manga IP.
SPNI’s SVP of programming Ronojoy Chakraborty has been championing the sequel project after seeing a groundswell of renewed interest in the IP develop from airing the original series (164 x 22 minutes) on Sony YAY!’s linear and YouTube channels. TV Asahi will oversee script development and character designs, with Green Gold Animation on deck to handle the production of 26 new episodes in India.
Targeting kids ages six to 11, Obocchama-kun follows the mischievous adventures of Chama, the young heir apparent to the Obo Group dynasty and all its riches. Each episode finds him caught up in different a strange situation, like thinking a group of kidnappers want to be his new friends, or using his unlimited wealth to hire a team of bodybuilders and win sports day at his prestigious private school.
TV Asahi will premiere the first episode of Obocchama-kun‘s sequel later this month at a MIPCOM breakfast session taking place on Monday, October 21. And SPNI plans to air the series across India next year, while TV Asahi sells the international TV, streaming and L&M rights everywhere else.
