The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) is continuing to shine a bigger spotlight on the kids industry by adding three more new categories this year.
A Children’s Scripted prize will be awarded to the best scripted content in kids TV genres such as drama and comedy, while Children’s Non-Scripted singles out the best in factual, documentary and news-style programming. And finally, a Children’s Craft Team award will recognize the best crews working behind the camera, either on scripted or non-scripted productions.
Eligible programming must target kids under the age of 17 and can be either live action or animation. BAFTA will introduce these new categories at the 2025 editions of its annual awards ceremonies, the BAFTA Television Awards (February) and the BAFTA Television Craft Awards (April).
This news comes on the heels of BAFTA previously announcing two other new categories—the Children and Family Film Award (BAFTA Film Awards) and the Family Award (BAFTA Games Awards)—joining the mix in 2025.
All five new awards are expected to bring more attention to “the essential contributions of this creative community,” according to a release. And they are part of BAFTA’s phased plan to profile the very best of films, games and TV for children and families across its award shows.
“The children’s screen [industry] leads the way when it comes to diverse and educational storytelling, and it’s an important and essential talent pipeline—with British children’s screen characters beloved by families across the world,” adds Andrew Miller MBE, chair of the Young BAFTA Advisory Group and BAFTA Trustee.
Entries can be submitted online through the BAFTA portal, and more information on rules and deadlines is available on the org’s official website.
