A robust lineup of kids series and feature films reduces the chance that American households will pull the plug on their streaming services, according to a new study published today by Ampere Analysis.
Based on data from Q1 2024, the report reveals that only 28% of US households with kids were considering canceling their SVOD subscriptions, as opposed to 36% of households without kids. Galvanized by this trend, streamers acquired 4% more kids content in 2023 than they did the previous year, despite the fact that the genre’s volume of original production was down by 18% in the same timeframe.
Ampere research manager Olivia Deane says this busier acquisitions market creates opportunity for prodcos that can find and secure independent funding, especially if they are working with established IPs. Production volume for kids book adaptations, for example, was only down by 9% in 2023, compared to 15% overall. And this trend seems to be holding so far in 2024, given that 50% of all kids series announced in the first half of the year were renewals.
