BAFTA-winning preschool series Balamory is making a comeback, two decades after its original run. BBC Children’s and Education has commissioned two new seasons (10 x 14 minutes each) of a reboot that’s slated to start airing on CBeebies in 2026.
This Scottish live-actioner originally ran in four seasons on CBeebies from 2002 to 2005, co-produced by Glasgow-based indie studio Tattiemoon (Woolly and Tig) and BBC Scotland. Balamory is about a nursery school in a small village where beloved teacher Miss Hoolie helps kids solve their everyday problems. Friendly community members including a police officer, an inventor, a school bus driver, a painter, a fitness instructor and two shopkeepers made regular appearances, and new characters are expected to be added to the mix this time around.
Roughly two million British viewers tuned into Balamory each week during its heyday, and the show won a Best Preschool Live Action Series prize at the 2004 BAFTA Children’s Awards. It was also picked up by Nickelodeon Australia, RTÉ Ireland, BBC Kids in Canada and Hong Kong’s TVB.
The BBC Children’s and Education team has yet to set this project up with a producer and is open to pitches for treatments that incorporate new faces and fan-favorite characters from the original—an ideal blend to attract today’s younger set and their nostalgic parents. The plan is to either return to Tobermory as the filming location, or choose another Scottish town such as Rothesay.
