Multi-hyphenate entertainer Mindy Kaling (pictured) has agreed to produce an untitled original feature film that’s in development at Paramount Animation.
Project details are scarce, but this will be a family-friendly project spotlighting a “wish fulfillment message” that is comedic and heartfelt, according to the studio.
With experience as an actor, writer and producer, Kaling is well-versed in the kids content genre. Her notable voice acting credits include such Disney/Pixar films as Inside Out (2015), Wreck-It Ralph (2012) and Disney+ toon Monsters at Work (2021). And on the live-action front, she created Netflix teen series Never Have I Ever (2020) and starred in the 2018 film adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time.
Jay Brown and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith (Annie) are also on board as producers, working with a script written by Aathil Chaturvedi and Justin Soul. Animation department director And Shawn Wong (Star Trek: Prodigy) is overseeing the project on behalf of Paramount Animation.
The studio division has been beefing up its original film slate lately, teasing five projects at Annecy Festival in June. Among them were Dropz (an E.T.-inspired pic that will be produced by rapper/singer Bad Bunny and actor Will Ferrell), a retelling of Swan Lake, and an edgy fairytale-inspired feature called Once Upon a Motorcycle Dude.
Currently, however, the Paramount Animation team is busy gearing up for two major theatrical releases based on well-established legacy IPs—Transformers One, which is due out on September 20; and The Smurfs Movie, which premieres on February 14 next year. That’s roughly around the same time that parent company Paramount Global is expected to wrap up an US$8-billion merger transaction with Skydance Media.
