New York-based gameco Tilting Point is implementing a new round of job cuts as it grapples with challenging external factors.
“As anyone watching the games industry is acutely aware, the current market is tough, and it has impacted us as well,” said CEO and founder Kevin Segalla in a statement. “We have done everything we can to maintain the shape of the business as long as possible, however we have come to a point where we have had to make some difficult decisions in order to continue operating a healthy ongoing company.”
As much as 20% of the company’s global team will be affected, including employees located in New York, Boston, San Diego, Barcelona, Kyiv and Seoul. This represents around 90 staff members who will be let go from a total workforce of roughly 450. Based in Spain, Kerem Özer (product manager and game designer) and Romana Witschi (producer) are among those who have already been laid off.
Tilting Point is behind popular free-to-play mobile games such as Star Trek Timelines (2016), Food Truck Chef (2017) and last year’s SpongeBob Adventures: In a Jam. The company has been navigating rough waters for quite some time. Last year, it eliminated 14% of its employees. And in June, Tilting Point agreed to pay US$500,000 to settle allegations of COPPA violations tied to its SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off kids game app.
“We are making every effort we can to support those who are departing, including helping outgoing employees to find new positions, and creating a Tilting Point Alumni network where alums can support and refer employees to their current and new employers,” Segalla added.
