Google’s new phone uses licensed characters to get kids smiling

Pixel 9 Pro Fold's innovative Made You Look camera features animated characters—including Joy from Pixar's Inside Out 2—to make family selfies easier to take.

Google is experimenting with a fun kids licensing hook to make taking family photos easier on its new Pixel 9 Pro Fold phone, which is available for pre-order now and scheduled to hit retail on September 4.

When it’s in selfie mode, the company’s innovative Made You Look feature has animated characters from Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out films—including primary character Joy—moving around on the screen. The idea is to establish eye contact with kids, make them smile, and keep their gaze locked in long enough to take a perfect shot.

Inside Out is the first licensed franchise to be featured in this new tool, but more will be announced in the future, according to Google. Made You Look is also launching with some original animation built around a pair of green and purple animated characters that battle for space on the screen.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold phone and its new features were unveiled yesterday at a Made by Google hardware event in Mountain View, California.
