Warner Bros. Discovery shuts down Cartoon Network’s website

The move comes on the heels of a major Q2 loss for the media conglomerate, as well as its decision to close the Boomerang streamer.

It’s the end of an era for the Cartoon Network website, which went dark last week after 26 years of engaging kids and fans online.

Warner Bros. Discovery has posted a notice on the landing page of the cartoonnetwork.com URL that redirects users to create a kids profile on its flagship streamer Max, where all shows from the kidsnet are available. The message also reminds cable subscribers that they can still watch CN programming on TV.

“We are focusing on the Cartoon Network shows and social media, where we find consumers are the most engaged and there is a meaningful potential for growth,” a Cartoon Network spokesperson said. “While we have closed some digital products, fans can continue to interact with Cartoon Network via the Cartoon Network app, as well as [select TV providers’ apps and social platforms].”

Earlier this month, WBD announced it was shutting down Boomerang, its classic toon streamer, with plans to migrate subscribers to Max in September. The David Zaslav-led company is coming off a tough week in which it reported a net loss of nearly US$10 billion for Q2—primarily down to an impairment charge driven by the declining value of its cable TV assets.

The Cartoon Network website has had a long history of being the go-to place for kids to play games and watch videos based on brands like Scooby-Doo, Teen Titans, The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball. Its shutdown reportedly occurred on August 8, but some international versions still appear to be live today as of press time. It’s unclear if they are also expected to close soon and redirect to the corresponding WBD service in their respective regions.

WBD is not the only media giant taking down legacy channel websites of late. Paramount made a similar move last month, with sites for MTV News and Comedy Central now redirecting users to the Paramount+ service.
