Disney plans a US$5-billion content spend in Europe

According to Disney EMEA president Jan Koeppen, the goal is to invest in making new blockbuster films and TV shows in the EU and UK over the next five years.

Disney’s recent box-office success is propelling the company to spend at least US$5 billion on films and TV series in the UK and continental Europe over the next five years.

EMEA president Jan Koeppen talked about this with the Financial Times yesterday. Disney’s recent cinematic blockbusters have set the company up for content growth. Inside Out 2 (pictured) has earned more than US$1.5 billion at the global box office and is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, while Deadpool & Wolverine (produced in UK’s Pinewood Studios) is currently sitting at US$900 million in worldwide ticket sales. “We feel like we’re really on a roll again with movies,” Koppen said.

Several high-profile Disney films are lined up to run through Pinewood Studios in the UK, including Snow White (which just wrapped), The Fantastic Four: First Steps and a new Star Wars film.

But beyond Europe, the Mouse House is planning to up its content investment in other parts of the world as well. A Disney spokesperson tells Kidscreen that the company’s plan is to spend at least US$1 billion annually in the MENA region over the next five years. And this money will go towards producing theatrical films, TV series and other content for Disney+ and National Geographic.

All of this future content will no doubt play into the company’s streaming business (Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+), which reached profitability ahead of schedule, according to the Q3 report it released earlier this week. Disney+ now has 118.3 million core subscribers (not including Hotstar), and it generated US$23.2 billion in Q3 revenue, up from US$22.3 billion in the same quarter last year.
