ASIFA-Hollywood—the largest chapter of the international non-profit org Association International du Film d’Animation—has selected interim executive director Aubry Mintz to take on the role permanently.

Mintz is a veteran animation educator, writer and character animator who currently teaches animation filmmaking at California State University, Long Beach. His previous education roles include director of animation and VFX at Chapman University in California, animation chair at Laguna College of Art and Design, and assistant professor at Toronto-based Sheridan College. His 2019 award-winning short film Nothing to Say was part of the worldwide festival circuit and was featured at the Palm Springs International Animation Festival and Canada Shorts. Mintz has also been a freelance writer for industry publications such as Cartoon Brew and Animation Magazine

In his new role, Mintz will focus on developing strategic plans for ASIFA-Hollywood’s fundraising to cover operational costs, as well as expanding membership and bolstering the org’s wide range of programs and initiatives, including the Annie Awards, ASIFA’s Animation Preservation Project and its diversity committee.

“With over 3,100 members, we have an amazing, diverse pool of talent to support and develop important initiatives. Together, we will help solve creative problems as we learn more about the changes and trends from around the globe,” said Mintz in a release.

He replaces Frank Gladstone, a fellow Cal State animation professor and veteran animation director, producer and writer, who was named executive director in 2011.

ASIFA-Hollywood’s next AGM will be held on August 14 at the Animation Guild in Burbank, California.
