A new study orchestrated by Florida-based HostingAdvice has found that 70.4% of Gen Alpha kids ask their parents weekly to buy them items they’ve seen online through social media platforms.

The report is based on a survey of 500 parents of kids ages seven to 14, who are noticing a growing appetite for online shopping among their offspring. According to HostingAdvice, 90% of the parents polled said their kids request items at least once a month—and 28% noted that this has become a daily occurrence.

Breaking down these asks by product category, video games are the number-one most desired item at 76%. And when console video games cost an average of US$69.99 per title, it’s no wonder that 65% of parents said they are spending more money on their children these days. Another 27% of parents are expecting to spend between 20% and 50% more this year, with only 7% planning to spend less.

Apparel (44%), makeup and beauty products (33%) and luxury items (27%) were also near the top of kids’ wishlists, no doubt thanks to inspiration from their favorite influencers on TikTok and YouTube. Nearly 50% of parents are fielding these kinds of requests from their daughters, but interestingly, 17% said their sons are also expressing interest.
