Nickelodeon has renewed its hip-hop-focused sitcom Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan for a fifth season. The live-action show’s new 13-episode season starts production on July 8 at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, and Nickelodeon is aiming for a late 2024 premiere. The new season will kick off with a holiday-themed episode.
Young Dylan centers on an aspiring young hip-hop star who moves in with his cousins and extended family. The personality clashes between the ambitious rapper and his strait-laced relatives drive much of the humor in this multi-cam sitcom.
The show’s creator and executive producer Tyler Perry is perhaps best known for playing a tough old granny named Madea in 13 comedy films (including Madea’s Tough Love, a 2015 animated film for families).
Young Dylan‘s launch in 2020—at a time when several other broadcasters and producers were also investing in kids rap content—helped set it up for success. Upon its release, the series scored the highest ratings for a Nickelodeon series premiere since 2017 (more than 1.3 million viewers collectively for two time slots, according to the kids broadcaster).
Beyond renewing the show, Nickelodeon has tapped into its popularity by having the 15-year-old Young Dylan character (played by 15-year-old actor and rapper Dylan Gilmer) guest star on Nickelodeon’s other hip-hop focused series, That Girl Lay Lay. He also had a role in a 2022 crossover episode of Side Hustle (called “Worlds Collide”) that featured characters from Young Dylan and four other Nickelodeon shows.
