PBS KIDS is getting ready to roll out a 14 x 22-minute seventh season of Fred Rogers Productions’ Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood in late summer, and the format has been rejigged to make the award-winning animated preschool series’ socio-emotional learning stories even more relatable to kids.

For the first time, each episode will feature a story from the point of view of a popular side character, along with a story from Daniel’s perspective. Characters getting their own narratives include Katerina Kittycat, Miss Elaina (pictured), O the Owl, Prince Wednesday, Jodi Platypus, Max and Chrissie. The show’s “Imagination Moments” segments will also spotlight the unique perspectives of fan-favorite characters for the first time.

As with previous seasons, each new episode will include two 11-minute stories connected in the middle by an interstitial.

The format change was implemented to make the show more inclusive and continue the legacy of Fred Rogers and his iconic series Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, which Daniel Tiger is based on.

“We’re excited that the new format will give children more opportunities to see themselves and their experiences represented as they get to know Daniel’s friends in a different way,” says Ellen Doherty, chief creative officer at Fred Rogers Productions.

Premiering August 12, season seven will also feature new songs, an episode set outside the Neighborhood of Make-Believe at Jodi’s dad’s house, and a half-hour special called “Something New About Trolley” in which Daniel and his friends wonder what’s different about their semi-sentient streetcar buddy.

The new season brings the show’s total volume up to 159 episodes. It’s produced by Fred Rogers Productions and 9 Story Media Group, with animation by 9 Story’s Brown Bag Films studio. Daniel Tiger is executive produced by creator Angela Santomero, Doherty and 9 Story president and CEO Vince Commisso.
