The Described and Captioned Media Program has teamed up with Paramount Global to make a big package of Nickelodeon programming more accessible to young audiences with disabilities.
DCMP’s free streaming service—which is distributed to registered families and schools in the US—has already added series such as Blues Clues & You! (pictured), Bossy Bear, Tiny Chef Show and Santiago of the Seas featuring audio description and captions. All told, the partnership will eventually cover “hundreds of hours” of Nick content to air and stream, with additional animated and live-action titles slated to join DCMP’s services on a rolling basis until 2029.
Films or TV series with audio description incorporate an additional narrative track that describes important visual elements to audiences who are blind or visually impaired. The DCMP is providing this upgrade to the Nickelodeon content with support from the Television Access grant, which is funded by the US Department of Education.
To qualify for free membership and access to the org’s streaming library, families and/or educators must have at least one child (early learning to grade 12) with a disability. The DCMP has previously partnered with companies such as Fred Rogers Productions, Scholastic, PBS KIDS, Nat Geo, BBC and Headspinner Productions on similar accessibility initiatives, and more information about how these partnerships work is available on the org’s official website.
