In partnership with Korean webtoon producer Kenaz (Murim Login, pictured), Ellipse Animation has launched a training program in France that will leverage its new webtoon division Ellipse Studio and parentco Média-Participations’ ONO platform.

The goal is to fast-track the development of French webtoon creators and producers in order to meet a growing global demand for this type of entertainment.

Ellipse’s program is similar to Kenaz’s Webtoon Academy, which launched in Seoul five years ago and expanded to run in Tokyo last year. Interested parties have until July 5 to apply to participate, and only 10 applicants from France and two from Africa will be accepted.

Following an online introduction in August, the course will run for 13 weeks from September to December at Ellipse Studio and the École des Métiers du Cinéma d’Animation (EMCA) in Angoulême.

EMCA, graphics tablet manufacturer Wacom and painting/drawing app Celsys are all backing the program, which offers free admission and materials, a unique opportunity for new writers and artists to learn from veteran Korean webtoon storytellers and producers, and the chance to produce a first series episode.

At the end of the 13 weeks, a jury of execs from Kenaz, Ellipse and ONO will select some participants to produce their webtoon series at Ellipse Studio in Angoulême, and these projects will be released on ONO at a later date.

Globally, webtoons generated US$3.7 billion in 2022 revenue, and this figure could hit US$60 billion by 2030, according to Amsterdam-based consulting firm BearingPoint. Ellipse managing director Caroline Audebert says France is the world’s fourth-largest market for webtoons after Korea, Japan and the US.

Ellipse Animation (The Adventures of Tintin, The Garfield Show) launched Ellipse Studio in January with the goal of turning original digital comics into new animated series and film adaptations. The unit’s first projects include a collection of four original French titles for teens that will drop as weekly episodes on ONO. The ONO app has been downloaded more than half a million times since launching in March 2023.
