Deals in Brief – June 6, 2024

Moominvalley sells to six new buyers, Warner Bros. Discovery LatAm dives into Big Blue, and WildBrain's shows are making a splash in China.

  • Six broadcasters have acquired Gutsy’s CG-animated Moominvalley (pictured) series from distributor Banijay Kids & Family. RUV (Iceland) and RTS (Switzerland) picked up seasons one and two; NPO (Netherlands), ABC Australia and PBS (Thailand) went for seasons one to three, and TF1’s French SVOD TFOU Max is starting off with just season one. Based on a series of novels and short stories from Finnish author Tove Jansson, Moominvalley chronicles a coming-of-age journey as Moomintroll learns to balance being himself with being a positive member of his family and community.
  • Warner Bros. Discovery Latin America has picked up Guru Studio’s 52 x 11-minute comedy toon Big Blue to launch regionally on Cartoon Network and Max sometime in Q3.This 2D-animated series for five to nines is about a submarine crew exploring the ocean’s depths in search of underwater adventure.
  • WildBrain’s Caillou, Strawberry Shortcake and Teletubbies have made some major inroads in China this month. Streamers Youku, bilibili and iQIYI have all picked up the new Teletubbies reboot (13 x 30 minutes) that launched internationally on Netflix last year, as well as CG-animated spinoff series Teletubbies Let’s Go! (52 x five minutes). JY has acquired Strawberry Shortcake Berry in the Big City (120 x four minutes) and the original Strawberry Shortcake series (44 x 22 minutes). And iQIYI and Senyu have bought the new CG-animated Caillou series (52 x 11 minutes) plus five specials (45 minutes each).
  • Hachette Book Group’s Little Brown Books for Young Readers division is launching a publishing program for middle-grade readers based on online logic puzzle game Murdle. The Murdle Jr. range will feature puzzle books and novels, starting with the November 2024 release Murdle Jr. Curious Crimes for Curious Minds: Solve Your Way Through 40 Puzzle Mysteries! G.T. Karber, who created the daily digital murder puzzle game in 2022, is writing the book. A follow-up puzzle compilation and a companion novel will come out in May 2025.
