Nick Studios greenlights a Thundermans spinoff

The original live-action series got its second wind on streamers Netflix and Apple TV+ in 2021/2022, and that momentum has ignited interest in a fresh show concept.

Nickelodeon Studios has ordered a new live-action spinoff based on The Thundermans, which aired for four seasons on Nickelodeon from 2013 to 2018, and then connected with a new streaming audience on Netflix and Apple TV+.

The as-yet-untitled series will continue the story of a family of superheroes who have to hide their powers while simultaneously battling villains in their hometown. The spinoff will focus on the three Thunderman kids as they work undercover to investigate suspicious activity at their school.

Following its streaming debut in Q4 2021, The Thundermans became the number-one title among kids ages six to 11 across all SVODs, according to Paramount. Encouraged by this success, Nick and Paramount+ quickly greenlit a 70-minute film called The Thundermans Return, which launched on both platforms this March and was watched by 1.6 million viewers during its premiere weekend.

Production on the spinoff starts this August in Vancouver, but a premiere date has not been set yet. Cast members from the original series who will reprise their roles include Kira Kosarin (Phoebe), Jack Griffo (Max) and Maya Le Clark (Chloe), and others will make guest appearances. Kosarin and Griffo are also executive producers, working with Nickelodeon’s executive in charge of production, Brian Banks. And Shauna Phelan, head of live action for Nickelodeon & Awesomeness, is overseeing production.

Nick has been on something of a spinoff/reboot streak lately, with Zoey 102 (July 2023) and Snow Day (December 2022) both in the market, and upcoming series The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish (20 x 22 minutes) set to launch later this year.
