Sony Pictures Television (SPT) Kids is aging down the Charlie’s Angels franchise with a new Portuguese-language series for tweens in development.
The studio will co-produce this live-actioner with Floresta, an SPT-owned outfit based in São Paulo that’s behind regional Brazilian kids shows like Use Sua Voz (Max/Cartoon Network) and Bugados (Gloob).
Set in Latin America, the new show’s premise revolves around three pre-teens whose special skills lead them to a secret spy school known as Angels Academy. In keeping with the signature tenets of the franchise, the girls will navigate crime-solving, action-packed missions and a mysterious boss.
There’s no broadcaster attached yet, but Sony has recruited Brazilian actor/writer Suzana Pires (A Magia de Aruna) to pen the script.
“We’re excited to have an opportunity to evolve this incredible Sony IP for a younger modern audience,” says Joe D’Ambrosia, EVP and GM of SPT Kids. He adds that the show will lean on cliffhanger storytelling, but with elements that are more relatable to kids built in, such as taking a break from saving the world to get homework done.
Sony Pictures Entertainment owns the Charlie’s Angels brand, which originated in the ’70s as a same-name crime series for adult audiences that aired on ABC. It later spawned three film adaptations—a duology in 2000 and 2003, followed by a reboot in 2019.
Other iterations of the story have included a Charlie’s Angels: Animated Adventures web series, a short-lived TV revival in 2011, almost half a dozen video games and a range of comic books.
