UK-based developer 10:10 Games is working on an interesting new “festival of fandom” title in partnership with lifestyle brand Funko, Universal Products & Experiences and physical distribution partner Skybound Games—and it could lead to new gaming opportunities for Funko’s many other entertainment brand partners.
Funko Fusion is taking pre-orders now for a September 13 rollout on Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. As its name suggests, the game uses a pop-culture mashup strategy—featuring 60-plus characters and settings from the IP library of NBCUniversal—to attract a wide audience. The list includes a mix of family-friendly IPs such as Jurassic World and Masters of the Universe, plus some decidedly adult ones (like Chucky and JAWS). Additional IP integrations hail from Scottgames (Five Nights at Freddy’s) and Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead).
All of the characters are designed in the style of Funko Pop! figures, with their signature large heads and tiny bodies. And although a recently launched trailer hints that Fusion will skew a bit older for tweens/teens and up, this strategy could easily translate to a game for Funko’s younger consumer base.
“Funko Fusion is our first, explosive entry in console video gaming,” says Jason Bischoff, VP of licensing and business development at Funko. And it could help stem a tide of declining sales that the collectibles giant has been experiencing lately. Funko recorded a net loss of US$154.1 million last year, with Q4 net sales at US$291.2 million—down from US$333 million for the same period in 2022.
