Epic Games has teamed up with Billie Eilish to bring the popular singer/songwriter into its Fortnite Festival music and rhythm game mode that lets users play licensed songs with friends or remix their own.

Outfits, emotes and new tunes inspired by the Grammy-winning artist and her discography are unlockable until June 13. Eilish, who’s only 22, won an Oscar for Best Original Song in February with “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie movie. Her songs have collectively racked up more than 75 billion streams worldwide, and the two studio albums she has released are both certified platinum (selling more than a million units each).

Eilish currently has around 120 million Instagram followers, and a Chartmetric analysis of her account from 2019 shows that 22% of followers were girls between the ages of 13 and 17.

Fortnite Festival, which launched last December, is part of a broader strategy at Epic Games to expand the free-to-play Fortnite experience in new ways. The company also teamed up with The LEGO Group in April 2022 to create LEGO Fortnite, a game mode where players can collect materials, build things and fight enemies.

Fortnite has around 650 million registered users, and it generated US$4.4 billion in revenue in 2022. It’s no stranger to tapping into music to engage its audience, either. In fact, Fortnite pioneered digital concerts during the pandemic—launching events with Marshmello (2019) and Travis Scott (2020) that millions of viewers tuned into.
