Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast president is resigning

After steering the division through two years of impressive growth, former Microsoft exec Cynthia Williams plans to leave the toyco next week, two days after its Q1 earnings report.

Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming president Cynthia Williams has announced that she will resign on April 26.

The timing of this key executive departure comes just as the toyco is gearing up to report its Q1 earnings on April 24. In an SEC filing issued yesterday, Hasbro shared that it’s looking at both internal and external candidates to find a successor to take over this critical business unit.

Williams joined Hasbro two years ago, following a three-year stint as GM and VP of Microsoft’s Xbox division. She replaced Chris Cocks in the WOTC president role when he was promoted to CEO, overseeing the toyco’s physical and digital board game business, including iconic tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons and trading card game Magic: The Gathering. Under her leadership, Magic became the first Hasbro brand to generate more than US$1 billion in annual gross sales.

While Hasbro works to rebuild its core toy business and entertainment offering against the backdrop of a slowing toy market, the Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming division was the only segment of the company’s business to post growth last year. Strong sales for licensed role-playing game Baldur’s Gate III (Larian Studios) and Magic’s crossover booster set with the Lord of the Rings franchise helped to generate US$1.45 billion in revenue last year, up 10% from US$1.32 billion in 2022.
