After a slow sales month in January, US book sales were up by 4% last month—and kids and youth titles outperformed all other categories, according to market research firm Circana.

The retail data tracker’s Books Media Report for February 2024 shows that sales across all juvenile publishing categories increased by more than 3.3 million units month over month, with holiday, activity, seasonal titles and some key bestsellers driving this growth.

Taylor Swift: A Little Golden Book Biography was February’s number-one bestselling kids title in the US, moving more than 90,000 copies. This marks the fanbook’s 44th consecutive week on Circana’s Top 10 Kids Bestsellers list.

Meanwhile, Dr. Seuss classics Green Eggs And Ham (77,670 units), One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (67,390 units) and The Cat in The Hat  (47,407 units, pictured) collectively had the most market share in the kids category last month. Circana attributes this high demand to market anticipation for Seuss Month, which kicked off on March 2 with a read-across-America event to celebrate the late author’s birthday.

Seasonal titles tying into Valentine’s Day naturally did well in February, with Nicola Edwards’ You’re My Little Cuddle Bug (60,094), Rose Rossner’s I Love You Like No Otter (52,463) and Alice Shertle’s Little Blue Truck’s Valentine (50,517) all making Circana’s top 10. But Easter also hopped onto the bestsellers list a little early; consumers purchased nearly 50,000 units of beginner picture book It’s Not Easy Being A Bunny by Marilyn Sadler and Roger Bollen.

While her books are classified slightly outside the kids stream, it’s worth noting that Sarah J. Maas is so far the bestselling author of 2024 on the Circana BookScan, thanks to her ongoing tween/teen fantasy series A Court of Thorns and Roses, which has sold more than 2.2 million units in 2024 so far. This five-volume epic saga follows the adventures of 19-year-old huntress Feyre, who gets captured and dragged into a magical world by an immortal faerie after she kills a mystical wolf.
