Pixar launches an Inside Out SEL app with the University of Colorado

Leading into the sequel's June 14 theatrical premiere, InsideU teaches kids ages six to 13 about emotional wellness and relationship management.

Pixar Animation Studios and the University of Colorado’s Renée Crown Wellness Institute have just rolled out a free social-emotional learning app based on Pixar’s 2015 CG-animated family feature Inside Out

InsideU is available on the university’s website as a free educational tool to teach kids ages six to 13 how to identify and process their emotions and successfully manage relationships. According to the Crown Institute, the Inside Out IP is a natural fit for the project since its characters embody many of the core emotions children that age are regularly facing, from joy and anger, to fear and sadness.

In the app, users start by meeting a “Mind Worker” who guides them through the interactive play experience and shares insights about how kids can understand their feelings better. Four chapters are currently available, combining movie clips with real-world scenarios typically encountered by kids in elementary school. And the plan is to update with more content in the coming months.

The Crown Institute partnered with Australia’s Liquid Interactive to craft the animation for the Mind Worker character, and with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver to test engagement and usability throughout the app’s development process. Leading the project is assistant research professor Sam Hubley, who is the grandson of Oscar-winning Disney animator John Hubley (Pinocchio, Fantasia and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves).

Inside Out 2 is launching in theaters worldwide on June 14, featuring a storyline that’s all about navigating anxiety and the emotional ups and downs of puberty. Disney released a trailer last week that has fired up market anticipation for the film’s early summer premiere.
