Nintendo and Illumination are co-producing a sequel to their theatrical hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie (pictured), which premiered in April 2023 and earned more than US$1.36 billion at the global box office.

Details about Mario’s return to the Mushroom Kingdom are scarce at the moment, but the new movie is slated to bow in US theaters on April 3, 2026, with Universal Pictures distributing it to additional markets and territories worldwide that month. Nintendo director and producer Shigeru Miyamoto announced the CG-animated sequel as part of the game developer’s annual MAR10 Day, which celebrates the Mario franchise with game reveals and consumer product launches.

Illumination CEO and founder Chris Meledandri is joining Miyamoto as a producer on the film, which will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning as directors, with Matthew Fogel also coming back to pen the script.

Coinciding with MAR10 Day, The LEGO Group has announced that it will build on its existing consumer products partnership with Nintendo by launching a new range of Super Mario-branded building sets throughout 2024, including King Boo’s Castle, Bowser’s Train and new electronic-starter courses for Mario, Peach and Luigi. These will be followed next year by sets based on the Mario Kart racing games.
