The European Film Market (EFM) kicks off tomorrow in Berlin, running alongside the popular week-long Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), and more than 10,000 buyers, producers, sales agents, distributors and financiers are expected to be in the German capital doing business.
Recently announced kids and family films heading to this year’s market include Toei Animation’s Hypergalactic and Flamingo Flamenco from Studio 100 Media and 3Doubles Producciones, but here are four more that we recommend watching out for in Berlin.
My Freaky Family (87 minutes)
Directed by kids TV vet Mark Gravas (Casper’s Scare School) and produced by Australia’s POP Family Entertainment and Irish studio Telegael, this CG-animated fantasy is about a musically talented girl who uncovers secrets about her magical—and freaky—family ahead of her 13th birthday.
Euro sales agent Studio 100 Film has already locked down international distribution deals with Viva Films (US), Alba Films (France) and Notorious (Italy), and talks are underway with partners in other territories in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
Gracie and Pedro: Pets to the Rescue! (90 minutes)
This CG-animated buddy comedy hails from Second Change Productions (US), Polycat Animation (South Africa) and Storywarrior Media Capital (US). When a high-maintenance purebred pup and a defiant rescue cat are accidentally stranded at the airport, they must work through their fundamental species differences to get back to their family.
Kevin Donovan (The Tuxedo) and Gottfried Roodt (Noodle and Bun) are directing, and the film’s star-studded voice cast includes Bill Nighy, Susan Sarandon, Alicia Silverstone, Brooke Shields and Danny Trejo. Hungary’s Luminescence Film is at EFM selling this family pic.
Fox and Hare Save the Forest (71 minutes, featured image)
This European co-pro for four- to seven-year-olds is based on the Vos en Haas en de Bosbaas book series penned by Flemish children’s author Sylvia Vanden Heede and published in more than 10 countries by Belgium’s Lannoo.
Produced by Dutch studio Submarine, Doghouse Films in Luxembourg and Belgian indie Walking The Dog, the film centers around the appearance of a mysterious lake and the disappearance of Owl—two cases that must be solved by besties Fox and Hare. Fox and Hare Save the Forest was also presented at Cartoon Movie last fall.
Bollywoof (running time TBD)
Dublin-based Cantilever Media, Sky Cinema in the UK and France’s Mikros Animation are helming this dog-centric family feature set in India, where a lost British pooch recruits the help of a local street dog (who has a major passion for Bollywood) to find his way back to his family. Frederik Du Chau (Racing Stripes) is directing.
Brit studios Newscope Films, Good Story and Parti Productions are also attached as co-producers, and the UK government’s British Film Institute has supported the project’s script development.
Cantilever and Sky previously teamed up on The Amazing Maurice in 2022, and this is their second animated film together. Eyeing a 2026 release, Embankment Films is now looking to secure global pre-sales.
