DreamWorks Animation is mapping out a mega-sized franchise plan for a cult classic IP, with a feature film sequel called Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate (pictured).
This surprise follow-up to 2010’s Megamind has been quietly in the works at the studio and is now slated to drop on NBCUniversal’s streamer Peacock on March 1.
Eric Fogel (The Barbie Diaries, My Scene Goes Hollywood) is directing, with IP creators Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons attached as writers, and all three will serve as executive producers. Picking up where the first film left off, the sequel explores how the reformed supervillain protagonist navigates his new role as the city’s defender, and his first task is to stop his former evil teammates.
The Doom Syndicate is designed to be watched before DreamWorks Animation’s previously announced series Megamind Rules! (eight x 22 minutes), which will roll out at the same time on Peacock.
The streamer acquired this show back in February 2022, and it was originally in development under a different name (Megamind’s Guide to Defending Your City). The premise sees the titular alien continuing his journey to adapt to the superhero lifestyle while also embracing a new role as a social media influencer.
The original Megamind movie grossed nearly US$322 million worldwide against a budget of US$130 million. It went on to spawn three branded video games from publisher THQ, a comic book series from Ape Entertainment and a 2011 short film titled Megamind: The Button of Doom.
