WBD’s streamer Max is aiming to reel in kids next year with four new family-friendly unscripted series in development at Magnolia Network—the Texas-based banner of TV personalities (and real-life couple) Chip and Joanna Gaines (pictured).

The projects include: “social experiment” series Back to the Frontier (working title), in which families try to live as 1800s pioneers; talent competition Second Chance Stage (working title), giving contestants who previously put their dreams on hold a big break; and quirky competition series Human vs Hamster, which pits people against rodents in an variety of games to determine which species is stronger and smarter.

Also in development is a previously announced concept called Roller Jam (working title), which will see the best roller-skating crews from all over the US battle it out for a team trophy.

Magnolia is working on other projects for Max that will be announced in the future, according to both companies. Magnolia Network is a joint venture between the Gaines and Warner Bros. Discovery.

This new programming is designed to elevate Max’s co-viewing offering, according to Magnolia president Allison Pag. “We recognized a white space in Max for fun, family-friendly content with unique formats and imaginative competition shows.”

There’s been a notable uptick in unscripted fare in the market lately. And these new titles from Magnolia should also help Max keep its catalogue fresh while the actors strike (which crossed the 100-day mark last month) continues. Although the writers strike ended in September, SAG-AFTRA is still deep in negotiations with studios over AI and streaming residuals.
