MGA Entertainment has signed a multi-year deal that will see London-based distributor CAKE sell its upcoming CG-animated/live-action hybrid series Armorsaurs (pictured) worldwide.
MGA and South Korea’s Daewon Media are in production now on the new 13 x 30-minuter, which should be ready for delivery in 2025. CAKE will handle all distribution rights globally outside of South Korea, Japan, China and France, which are managed by Daewon.
Armorsaurs is a remake of Daewon’s 2021 animated/live-action series Armored Saurus. MGA partnered with the South Korean studio in August 2022 to develop, produce and distribute a new screen iteration of the property, and MGA also controls the toy and L&M rights.
Like the original, Armorsaurs is an action-adventure series about a group of pilots (live action) who control armored dinosaurs to fight alien invaders. Armored Saurus premiered on Seoul Broadcasting System in 2021, and a second season quickly followed. Several local buyers have since picked up the show, including KBS Kids, Bravokids and Netflix (South Korea).
MGA is very focused on growing its entertainment and content business at the moment. The company partnered with Zapf Creation in August to produce a first-ever animated series based on lifelike doll brand BABY born. (MGA holds a majority stake in Zapf, and is aiming to merge with the German manufacturer in a deal that’s expected to close in spring 2024.) It also started experimenting with personalized content in January, when it teamed up with Texas-based AI animation company Aquifer to launch a site where kids can get animated videos featuring MGA’s L.O.L. Surprise! characters.
