Although Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has not yet hit theaters, the new iteration of the popular franchise is already expanding well out of its “shell”.

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are developing a sequel to Mutant Mayhem, which premieres August 2, as well as a two-season series for Paramount+ that will serve as a bridge between the movies, as reported by Variety

Mutant Mayhem is nearly a week away from its release, and these early greenlights signal that the studio is confident in its latest effort to reboot the nearly 40-year-old franchise. Mutant Mayhem is a CG-animated reimagining of the TMNT IP, leaning more into coming-of-age themes than previous iterations have, and notably casting teen actors for the first time to voice the foursome of crime-fighting turtles.

Jeff Rowe, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay for Mutant Mayhem, is returning to also helm the sequel. Meanwhile, Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) and Alan Wan (Star Trek: Prodigy) will executive produce and serve as showrunners on the 2D-animated series, which is called Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Point Grey Pictures—the banner fronted by actor Seth Rogen and filmmaker Evan Goldberg—is back to produce both the movie sequel and the series, with Lukas Williams overseeing both projects on its behalf.

TMNT debuted in a 1984 comic book created by artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Since then, the popular IP has expanded into lucrative toy ranges, video games and several animated and live-action adaptations—including six TV series and six theatrical features.

In a Variety profile published yesterday, Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins highlighted the company’s film strategy of leaning into nostalgic Millennial-friendly properties like SpongeBob SquarePants and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Movies based on both classic Nick IPs are slated for 2025 releases
